Is 'academia' restricted to enrolled university students?

(in addition to staff, faculty, etc.) I am thinking of taking some online versions of MIT courses and was thinking it'd be cool to have a thread for people who are taking courses or tutorials in some nontraditional way. Would 'academia' be a good place for that or should I put such a thread elsewhere?

I've had a couple times where I have tried to search for a Support Group thread and get an error saying "(search term) is too common." This isn't just for words like "and" or "the," it includes words specific enough to be the only good descriptors for the thread I want. Is there a way around this? A...
